10 tips to protect yourself from internet "phishing" fraud

WTC is warning its customers to be vigilant—and suspicious—when disclosing information about their accounts to outside parties.
In a recent resurgence of "phishing," some WTC customers have received an email which appears to be from us, but which asks users to disclose their user name along with their account password. Remember, WTC will never ask for your account information or password in an unsolicited email. Be wary of any request which asks you to log on to an unfamiliar website and enter your account details. If you have any suspicions, contact WTC Technical Support immediately.

According to internet watchdog group FraudWatch International, most internet fraud attempts can be stopped by a combination of consumer education and diligence. Their top ten tips for protecting your account include:

  1. Never click on hyperlinks within emails. Instead, copy and paste them into your browser;
  2. Use SPAM filter software;
  3. Use anti-virus software;
  4. Use a personal firewall;
  5. Keep software updated (operating systems and web browsers);
  6. Always look for "https://" and padlock on web sites that require personal information;
  7. Keep your computer clean from spyware;
  8. Educate yourself of fraudulent activity on the internet;
  9. Check and monitor your credit report;
